Axion Estin Concert
Axion Estin will honor Mr. Chronis Aidonidis for his life-long contribution in the field of Greek folk music in an extended concert program demonstrating the common musical features of chant and folk music. The concert will be held at Graduate Center's Proshansky Auditorium.
For nearly 50 years, Chronis Aidonidis has gained wide recognition, especially for his interpretations of the slow, melismatic songs of Eastern Thrace with their characteristic Byzantine colour. In the case of Chronis Aidonidis we find the best incarnation of the view that Greek folk song sprang from Byzantine music in an unbroken continuity.
Christos Chalkias represents a younger generation of Greek Folk singers, who also shares the same passion for the Byzantine Chant traditions. The two leadings interpreters will offer a unique mix of Greek folk songs and Medieval hymns for what promises to be another magical program in one of New York City's most exceptional concert halls.
Mr. Chalkias' interpretation will be accompanied by instrumentalists Lefteris Bournias (clarinet), Mavrothi Kontanis (oud), and other NY-based musicians.
The Graduate Center is located at Fifth Avenue and 34th Street across from the Empire State Building, and is convenient to all major transportation routes. Grand Central Terminal, Pennsylvania Station, the midtown PATH, and all major New York City subway and bus lines are within easy walking distance.
