BUILDING A BYZANTINE CHOIR
The central workshop of this symposium is offered by Lycourgos Angelopoulos assisted by the members of his world-renowned Greek Byzantine Choir. Mr. Angelopoulos will be assisted in his presentation by Dr. Alexander Lingas, who will translate the sessions from Greek to English and offer brief background information if necessary.
These workshops will take place during the morning session of all three days of the symposium. The total duration of each day's workshop will be approximately 2 1/2 hours, and will be divided into two parts. The first part will be a demonstration of the topic under evaluation utilizing members of the Greek Byzantine Choir. The second part will consist of Mr. Angelopoulos' interaction with symposium participants, applying the principles demonstrated during the first part.
The goal of this workshop is to train choir directors, choir members, psaltes, music educators, and others interested in Byzantine Music choir performance, and the basics of creating a Byzantine Choir. The best analogy to better describe this workshop is to imagine one who arrives in a new town and wants to create a Byzantine Choir from scratch. What would the necessary steps be to achieve this goal? Mr. Angelopoulos, taking advantage of the unique opportunity to use his entire choir in teaching others and the comfortable recital hall of The Graduate Center, CUNY, will illustrate the main principles of building a Byzantine Choir.
